1. Who Must Pay Zakat?
- Muslim (obligatory on believers)
- Free (not a slave)
- Sane & Adult
- Reaches Nisab (minimum wealth threshold)
- Owning Wealth for One Lunar Year (Hawl)
Non-Zakatable Items
- Household or home use items
- Personal House for living
- Personal Vehicle
- Transport for Transport Business
- Offspring of animals
- Bought Eggs, but chick borns
- Tools and Machines for work
- Diamonds and stones that are not for trade.
- Decoration items that are not for sale.
- Plot to make house
- Land for Agriculture or giving on rent.
- Artificial Jewelry that is not for sale.
2. Nisab (Minimum Threshold)
- Gold: 85 grams (approx. 7.5 tola)
- Silver: 595 grams (approx. 52.5 tola)
- Cash/Assets: Equivalent to the value of 85g of gold (approx. 7.5 tola) or 595g of silver (approx. 52.5 tola) (scholars differ; most use silver as a lower threshold).
- Business Goodwill: Value of stock after deducting liabilities.
- Livestock & Agriculture: Different rules apply (e.g., 5 wasq for crops).
3. Zakat Rate
- 2.5% on savings, gold, silver, cash, and business assets.
- 5% or 10% on irrigated crops (depending on water source).
- 20% on treasures (Rikaz) and mined wealth.
4. What is Zakatable?

5. Recipients of Zakat (8 Categories – Quran 9:60)
- Fuqaha (The Poor) – Those with insufficient wealth.
- Masakeen (The Needy) – Extremely poor with nothing.
- Zakat Collectors – Those appointed to distribute Zakat.
- New Muslims & Reconciliation of Hearts – To strengthen faith.
- Freeing Slaves (relevant in the past, now used for oppressed people).
- Debtors – Those in debt without extravagance.
- Fi Sabeelillah (In Allah’s Cause) – Includes students, jihad (defensive), and da’wah.
- Ibnus-Sabeel (Travelers in Need) – Stranded travelers.
Note: Zakat cannot be given to:
- Non-Muslims (except for “reconciliation of hearts”).
- Direct descendants (children, parents) or spouse.
- Wealthy individuals.
6. When to Pay Zakat?
- Annually, after one lunar year (Hawl) of owning the nisab.
- Many Muslims pay it during Ramadan for extra blessings, but it can be paid at any time.
7. Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana)
- A separate obligatory charity is paid before the Eid prayer.
- Amount: ~3kg of staple food (or equivalent cash).
- Recipients: Same as Zakat, but must reach them before Eid.
